Pierce County Public Works is responsible for the maintenance, operation, preservation and improvement of 1550 miles of county roads with 145 bridges, a regional sewer system with 100 pump stations and over 700 miles of pipe, a regional stormwater system with 67 miles of levees and over 500 ponds, solid waste facilities, ferries, and airports. SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Installation, maintenance, and repair of highway signs, sign supports, pavement markings, and traffic control devices. Duties may include painting, maintaining markings, washing signs, and taking traffic counts. Work may be indoors or outdoors, may be performed under hazardous traffic conditions, and may be subject to 24-hour on call status.
Position Summary:
THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION ARE
- Install and replace signs, sign components, and sign posts, using a variety of equipment and tools such as hand diggers, portable power augers, and pavement breakers; install overhead signs as required or directed.
- Operate various road and maintenance equipment; inspect/test/measure sign installations for adequacy per County standards; wash signs; perform routine maintenance work on signs and equipment.
- Prepare field layout and install stop bars, pedestrian crossings and turn arrows with paint or thermo-plastic materials; paint curbing with curb striping truck; replace and make new installations of traffic raised pavement markers, rumble bars, and other traffic control devices.
- Assist district-wide crew or acts independently in the installation of original signs; place utility locate request demarcations, and perform locating services of existing traffic control devices; install and replace shoulder delineators.
- Document and report work with computerized or other electronic devices, including the use of asset management and timekeeping programs.
- Lift, carry, and operate equipment or materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Perform outdoor physical labor for extended periods of time under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Perform proper traffic control signing and flagging in and around work areas.
- Maintains regular, predictable and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours at assigned worksite.
- Meets the traveling requirements of the position.
- Performs the physical requirements of the position; works within the established working conditions of the position.
- Works a flexible schedule, which may include evening, weekends, holidays and overtime.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Paint roadways with striping truck. *(CDL required to operate striping truck; volunteers will be sought from current Traffic Sign Technicians.)

Qualifications:
RECRUITING REQUIREMENTS
One or more years of related work experience OR any equivalent combination of education/experience which would clearly indicate the ability to perform the duties of the position. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS: A valid Washington State Driver’s License is required. Satisfactory physical condition is required, as indicated by a County approved physical, which includes drug testing. Schedule adjustments may be required with short notice. Union membership is required within 30 days of employment. Ability to successfully complete all required background investigations prior to start of employment. Individuals who have been convicted of crimes (which includes a deferred sentence) involving crimes against vulnerable adults, crimes against children, sexually related crimes, DUI, vehicular homicide, drug possession, drug manufacturing with the intent to distribute, assault, fraud, and theft of any kind within the last ten years may not meet the recruiting requirements for this position

The following driving standards represent the maximum allowable violations of driving laws and must not exceed six (6) total points in the last 36 months.

- Denial of issuance of driver’s license = 8 points
- Negligent homicide = 8 points
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs = 8 points
- Negligent Driving 1 (involving an accident) = 8 points
- Negligent Driving 2 (involving an accident) = 4 points
- Hit and run (attended) = 8 points
- Hit and run (unattended) = 6 points
- Driving while driver’s license suspended = 4 points
- Other moving violations involving an accident = 4 points
- Other moving violations not involving an accident = 2 points
- Reckless driving (involving an accident) = 8 points
- Reckless driving (not involving an accident) = 6 points
- Speeding in excess of the posted limit:
- 0 – 14 over = 2 points
- 15 – 19 over = 3 points
- 20 – 25 over = 4 points
- over 26 = 5 points
- 0 – 14 over = 2 points
* Note: Other driving offenses not listed here will be assessed points values on a case by case basis.
