Custodian - City of Auburn, WA - Auburn, WA

This is routine custodial and minor repair maintenance work while cleaning, caring for and maintaining City facilities and buildings.

Two positions are available. Regular work hours are as follows:

Monday – Friday, 12:00 noon – 8:30 p.m. and Monday – Friday, 4:30 p.m. – 1:00 a.m.


PRIMARY DUTIES

*Performs assigned duties and tasks independently as scheduled or directed to established cleaning methods and standards without direct supervision


*Deals tactfully and courteously with the public, coworkers, and other City employees, occasionally in difficult customer service situations.


*Cleans, disinfects and deodorizes restroom floors, toilets, urinals, walls, partitions, mirrors, fixtures and showers; deodorizes floor drains as required; checks and refills all soap, paper towel and toilet paper dispensers and restocks supplies.


*Vacuums carpets in meeting rooms, offices, hallways and council chambers.


*Spot cleans where necessary.


*Shampoos carpets according to maintenance schedule. Vacuums upholstered furniture as required.


*Sweeps, and wet and dry mops, tile, brick, linoleum and wood floors; strips or removes wax or floor finish build-up from floor surfaces as required; refinishes, waxes, buffs and burnishes floors as necessary.


*Cleans, refinishes and/or dusts staircases, counter tops, table tops, chairs, furniture, elevators, windows, wall surfaces, woodwork, light switches, doors, filing cabinets and bookcases as scheduled. Assists in cleaning window blinds.


*Cleans and sanitizes sink and appliances in lunchroom; replenishes paper towels and other supplies as necessary.


*Empties waste paper baskets, and disposes of trash daily; changes plastic liners and washes out wastebaskets as required.


*Removes and disposes of recycling materials from “Waste Paper Recycling Boxes” in offices and meeting rooms; empties contents into specified recycling collection containers.


*Sets up and takes down tables, chairs and/or podiums for City functions such as in meeting rooms, Council Chambers, Senior Center, and other City facilities.


*Neatly enters daily activities into a journal logbook.


*Performs light maintenance work in buildings including changing lights; minor repair of furniture, doors, plumbing, restroom and shower fixtures; and cleaning outside drains.


*Safely operates tools and equipment used in performing job functions; maintains and repairs custodial equipment.


*Safely mixes, uses and disposes of chemicals and cleaning agents used in performing job functions.


*Understands and correctly follows oral and written instructions.


*Communicates in a polite and courteous manner with employees and the public.


*Works efficiently and independently with little direct supervision.


*Monitors building security by locking doors and making checks to determine if building is secure.


*Orders cleaning chemicals, soap and paper supplies from Central Stores and maintains inventory control.


May train and supervise other custodial staff.


*Notifies appropriate personnel in cases of needed building maintenance emergency repair.


*May be required to work various schedules to meet needs; works overtime hours as required.


*Works effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions.


*Completes work and projects in a thorough and timely manner.


*Understands and follows directions from supervisor, posted work rules and procedures.


*Works courteously and effectively with public officials, citizens, contractors, vendors, supervisor, and other employees, both in person and over the telephone; assisting them with a wide variety of information pertaining to City and department.


*Shows initiative in performing job functions.


*Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Works in a clean, climate-controlled workspace; may work in inclement weather such as when removing trash and recycling materials to disposal sites. sometimes during inclement weather. Required to sit, talk, and hear; frequently required to use hands-to-finger, feel or handle writing utensils, computers and office supplies which require repetitive arm, wrist and hand movement. Repeatedly required to stand and reach with arms and hands, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend or crawl. Stands for long periods of time. Specific vision abilities include close, distant, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception and to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to lift or move up to 35 pounds. Works with chemicals and chemical solutions when performing job duties. Position requires mental acuity to ensure thorough mental analysis of situations in a fast-paced environment. Employee is required to maintain confidentiality of information within the department. The employee may be required to deal with disgruntled individuals requiring the use of conflict management skills. Employee is required to maintain professional composure and tact, patience and courtesy at all times.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

High school diploma or equivalent AND one year of full-time custodial building maintenance work experience
