To be considered for the first round of hiring in 2017, an applicant must pass the written examination between November 19, 2015 and September 28, 2016. The thirty-five (35) candidates who have the highest written exam scores, plus any ties, will be invited to participate in an oral board panel interview scheduled for the third week in October.

Requirements:
- Not less than 21 years of age at time of application.
- Must be a US citizen by time of test.
- Must be a high school graduate or have a GED by time of test.
- Possess a valid driver’s license with no pending risk of loss by time of test.
- No felony convictions, or released from prison within the last ten (10) years.
- Juvenile felony convictions – may not accept per VRFA Civil Service Rule 7.03.
- Ability to read and speak the English language.
- Must be able to meet medical/physical requirements.
- Must have completed a PST CPAT within 6 months of the written test.

Department Information: The Valley Regional Fire Authority (VRFA) was officially established on January 1, 2007. The VRFA joins the existing resources from the Auburn and Pacific Fire Departments to provide fire services to the communities of Algona, Auburn and Pacific. The Valley Regional Fire Authority provides modern, progressive and professional services to approximately 80,000 citizens residing throughout the 34 square miles of Algona, Auburn and Pacific. The Valley Regional Fire Authority is comprised of 120 staff. It is expected that the VRFA will respond to over 10,500, 9-1-1 incidents yearly.

Salary Information: 2016: Firefighter 4th Class Base Wage: $66,859 annually
Firefighter 1st Class Base Wage: $85,512 annually plus incentive pay and generous benefits.
Benefits Information: The Valley Regional Fire Authority offers a generous benefit package that also includes supplemental benefit options!The VRFA pays 100% of the cost for the employee and/or family premiums for medical, dental, orthodontia and vision insurance. Employees have the option to select from deferred compensation programs and in 2016 the VRFA will match up to 4%.The VRFA also contributes to a Medical Expense Reimbursement Plan (MERP) and Health Reimbursement Account (HRA). Employees receive $500/Employee only or $1,000/Family contribution quarterly in their Health Reimbursement Account and funds that are not used are rolled into a VEBA account.
