This is a non-exempt, temporary on-call employment opportunity and may end at any time at the discretion of the Library. The duration of appointment may not exceed one (1) year. This position is not eligible for benefits, however, the pay rate for this appointment includes a premium based on hours worked in lieu of benefits.
Overview
The Seattle Public Library is Seattle’s center of information and knowledge and one of the most popular and valued services in the city. The Intermittent Library Associate I classification is a rewarding, albeit physically demanding, position and plays an important role in maintaining the flow of materials throughout the library system when intermittent staffing is needed. The Intermittent Library Associate I position is used to fill-in for 4- to 8-hour appointments when needed with responsibilities including: shelving and checking in materials, retrieving materials and checking the accuracy of materials on the shelves of branches. Additional duties may include providing basic directory services to Library users and assisting patrons in the use of Library equipment and resources.
Employees are not placed on unit schedules and do not work normally on or assist with projects or programs. Intermittent employees may also be scheduled to backfill for a short-duration when existing staff are scheduled away from the branch for events such as outreach events. Intermittent staff may be assigned to any branch or Central Library location during hours that the library is open to the public. Selection for employment as an intermittent employee will give consideration to the candidate’s availability for work locations and hours.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED
Customer Service Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of customer service experience to the general public. A candidate’s experience must demonstrate the ability to apply customer service standards and apply organizational practices/policies when assisting patrons.
Organizational Skills: Candidates must have experience sorting books or other materials alphabetically and numerically, quickly, accurately and safely, and must be able to learn sorting and Library filing schemes such as the Dewey Decimal system. Experience with inventory tracking systems or catalogs is desired.
Written and Verbal Communication Skills: Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Candidates must be able to effectively respond to patron communications in person and via telephone, specifically the ability to listen to and understand customer concerns, assess available options and respond accurately and appropriately. Candidates must also be able to respond to patron requests for directional assistance. Candidates must be able to effectively communicate in English, verbally and in writing, as well as comprehend spoken and written English.
Experience using Personal Computers and Other Office Equipment: Candidates must have experience operating point-of-sale/service computer terminals that use menu-based commands to obtain, interpret, and display data and information related to customer accounts. Candidates must have experience using office equipment including copiers, printers, and cash registers. Candidates must also have experience using internet browsers and e-mail programs (such as Microsoft Outlook).
Schedule Flexibility: Candidates must be available to work hours at any Library location with limited notification. Intermittent employees must be available to answer their phones for assignment between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. every day of the week or weekend, or must notify the sick call line before 8:00 a.m. of their unavailability for that day. Regular availability is required for ongoing employment in the program.
Other Required Skills and Abilities: Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to work with others as part of a team on projects and have the ability to understand and apply verbal and written instructions. Candidates must also be able to bend, stretch, stoop, and lift bins up to 40 pounds in weight and push wheeled book carts weighing up to 200 pounds. Candidates must also have the ability to squeeze and release hand brakes on wheeled book carts.
Restrictions: Candidates must not be otherwise employed by The Seattle Public Library or the City of Seattle in any capacity while employed under the Library’s Intermittent Employment Program. Candidates who are appointed as intermittent employees and who are subsequently offered regular or temporary employment with the City must agree to separate from the intermittent program for at least one full pay period before beginning their new assignment.
