Kent Field Office
The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the non-permanent position of Community Corrections Specialist at the Kent Field Office, Kent, WA.
This non-permanent position is anticipated to last up to nine (9) months.
NOTE: This position may be filled as a Corrections Specialist 2 depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate.
Salary Information:
Corrections Specialist 2: $3,627.00 – $4,762.00/month
Community Corrections Specialist: $3,907.00 – $5,126.00/month Whether the work is inside a prison, in community corrections, or in an administrative office, the Washington State Department of Corrections professional staff experience a high degree of personal satisfaction knowing they are creating environments in which all offenders can learn to make choices that contribute to a safer society.
Note: The office duty station for this position is located at the Kent Field Office. The groups will be facilitated in South King County (Renton, Bellevue, Burien, Kent/Federal Way, and Auburn).

Duties
Priority work assignments include:
Facilitate CBI programming. Position typically required to facilitate 4 or more groups per week with 2 or more groups scheduled in the evening to meet offender availability.
Obtain a referral list of eligible offenders for the CBI program based on the program start date and determine from the referral list, available offenders for the CBI group.
Complete offender orientations to the CBI program.
Prepare lesson plans for the delivery of CBI programs.
Deliver the lesson plans to participants.
Observe and monitor offender participation and provide feedback on the lesson by providing positive reinforcement and additional coaching as necessary.
Identify and set appropriate behavioral targets to increase or decrease those behaviors for each participant.
Provide incentives to participants per program guidelines.
Schedule and facilitate make-up sessions as necessary and in accordance with the program requirements.
Host graduation events to acknowledge participants’ achievement in completing the CBI program. Other work assignments include:
Share with Community Corrections Staff the status of the ongoing CBI programs.
Document participation in CBI programs.
Participate in and complete all scheduled training/coaching sessions for CBI programs, and successfully demonstrate mastery of material within prescribed timelines.
Attend and fully participate with the Quality Assurance (QA) process.
Qualifications
CORRECTIONS SPECIALIST 2 Required Qualifications :
A Bachelor’s degree from a college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the US Department of Education
AND
Three years as a Community Corrections Officer within the Washington State Department of Corrections OR three years of professional case management* experience in adult or juvenile corrections or closely related field which includes at least three of the following:
Making field visits
Writing reports
Assessing cases and making recommendations
Referring people to appropriate resources
Presenting cases in court or hearings * Professional case management includes activities such as: assessment of risk factors; designing, monitoring, and/or facilitating treatment plans; determining and making referrals to resources as appropriate (chemical dependency, substance abuse, family counseling, job training assistance, etc.); maintaining official records and tracking client progress/compliance; and assisting individuals who are unable to independently access support systems or community resources such as those providing food, clothing, or monetary assistance and shelter.
Note: A Master’s degree in sociology, social work, psychology, criminology, or closely related field will substitute for one year of the required professional case management experience.
COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS SPECIALIST Qualifications :
In order to qualify at the Community Corrections Specialist level you must meet the above requirements, and also possess the following :
Six months’ experience facilitating CBI programs with a Quality Assurance component or professional experience in training or teaching equivalent to three full-time years.
Demonstrated competency in the following areas (competency may be gained through education, experience, or a combination thereof):
Facilitator Skills – Demonstrates empathy, facilitation/teaching techniques, understanding of group processes and interpersonal interactions, and the ability to control a group of offender participants through non-coercive means.
Community Relationships – Participates in the formation and maintenance of successful relationships with criminal justice partners and community resources.
Observation – Observes and strategizes personal response based on environmental conditions and human behavior.
Stress Tolerance – Remains calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include, but not limited to: volatile, threatening, or other crisis/emergency situations. Expertly intervenes in response to threats.
Professional Standards – Knows and applies community corrections related law, policy, procedure, and practice. Adheres to productivity standards and timelines established by law and policy. Identifies own training needs and proactively seeks training opportunities.
Adaptability – Incorporates new information into an existing framework of understanding. Accepts change and supports the Agency through changes in law, policy, and procedure. Special Requirements of this Position (at both classification levels):
This position is typically required to facilitate four (4) or more groups with two (2) or more groups scheduled in the evening to meet offender availability.
Will involve travel to field offices, institutions, and other locations. Overnight travel may be required. May be required to spend several days away from home for coaching and training. May be required to use personal vehicle to meet agency needs (reimbursement provided).
Must possess and maintain a vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Washington.
Must attend and successfully complete CBI training within thirty (30) days of hire or at the next scheduled training.
Must attend and successfully complete Motivational Interviewing (MI) training.
