TITLE: Domestic Violence Children’s Advocate


REPORTS TO : Director of Counseling and Education


LOCATION: 3301 Broadway, Everett, WA 98201


DESCRIPTION:
YWCA Children’s Domestic Violence Program provides advocacy based counseling for children and non-violent parents during a series of ten weekly, in-home sessions, engages the community in understanding domestic violence, and collaborates with the YWCA Counseling Department to provide on-going support to survivors.


This position has a social justice component that will require critical thinking around how external systems impact the work that we are doing through the lens of racism and intersections with poverty. Knowing the core principals of antiracism and grounding those principles in everyday work, as well as working well in non-white environments and championing anti-racism policy, are required job skills and core values. RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Performs initial interview with parent, completes intake procedures, safety screening, identifies barriers and strengths, family goals, individual children’s issues and schedules in-home sessions.

  • Deliver 10 week curriculum that addresses safety planning, responsibility issues, conflict resolution skills to children using play, art, videos and games to help children express themselves, identify feelings and strengthen resiliency skills.

  • Work with non-violent parents to enhance positive parenting skills.

  • Complete pre and post assessment tasks.

  • Document progress and outcome information.

  • Provide statistical data and program reports as needed.

  • Co-facilitate on-going therapeutic support group for survivors of domestic violence.

  • Provide community outreach to obtain appropriate referrals.

  • Participate in weekly counseling case consult meetings and monthly staff meetings.

  • Implement all work by incorporating the YWCA’s Social Justice Initiative by understanding how racism, sexism, classism and other oppressions intersect and are embedded in all institutions and systems. Recognize that solving racism is the root of how we understand and heal from these –isms.

  • Show demonstrated ability to interact with people of different cultures.

  • Continue search for understanding of racial, gender and class equity.

  • Adhere to all Volunteer Services protocol relative to volunteer usage, recognition and monitoring. Work alongside volunteers, where applicable. Understand where internalized oppressions (superiority and inferiority) play a role in volunteer and client interaction and know ways to address these oppressions from a solutions-based perspective.

  • Assure that volunteers are treated with respect and dignity regardless of race, ethnic background, gender or socioeconomic background. Understand how racism has played a role in defining what respect and dignity is and use racial equity and multiracial perspectives when teaming with volunteers.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & CORE COMPETENCIES


  • Extensive knowledge of domestic violence.

  • Extensive experience working or volunteering with children.

  • Commitment to cultural competency.

  • Knowledge of child development.

  • Ability and willingness to work independently and as part of a team and to make sound judgments without on-site supervision.

  • Knowledge of community resources.

  • Desire to travel daily to homes of program participants within Snohomish County.

  • Reliable transportation.

  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred

  • Experience working with communities of color

  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of racism and poverty

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THIS JOB:

  • Frequently sits for extended periods while performing desktop activities

  • Frequently stands and walks in performing duties in the office

  • Repetitively uses hands and wrists, fingering, handling, grasping, and reaching in using telephones, computers, fax machines and other office equipment and supplies

  • Frequently bends in obtaining files in drawers

  • Occasionally pushes and pulls up to ten pounds

*Continuously over 80% time, frequently 20-80% time, and occasionally under 20% time


HOURS, RATE, & BENEFITS


  • Full time, 40 hours total per week.

  • Rate $16.35 per hour

  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Classification: Non-exempt.

  • Excellent benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, flex accounts and generous retirement, vacation and sick leave plans.

  • At the time of hire, employees may choose to voluntarily enroll in the Fidelity 403b Plan. Typically after two years of employment, employees are eligible to participate in the YWCA Retirement Fund.
